Government Dispatches Team Of Epidemiologist To Counties Bordering Guinea
MONROVIA, Feb. 16 (LINA) – The Government of Liberia, through the Ministry of Health and the National Public Health Institute (NPHIL), has dispatched a team of epidemiologists to counties bordering the Republic of Guinea, following reports of the re-emergence of the deadly Ebola Virus Disease in that country.
The move according to a statement from the Ministry of Information is in strict adherence to a mandate issued by President George M. Weah for the activation of surveillance measures in order to prevent the transmission of the disease on Liberian soil. The epidemiologists are expected to support the county Health Teams of Grand Cape Mount, Gbarpolu, Bong, Lofa and Nimba counties, while other County Health Teams, including Montserrado, have also heightened their alert levels.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health, along with NPHIL, has constituted a new Incident Management System on Ebola Virus, as a preemptive strategy to assess Liberia’s preparedness. Liberian health authorities say they desire not to have the new IMS-Ebola virus response efforts interfere with the current COVID-19 response.
President Weah on Sunday, February 14, 2021, mandated the Ministry of Health and related stakeholders to increase the country’s epi-surveillance and preventative activities following an announcement by the Guinean Health Minister that about four people had died in the country of the virulent disease. Liberia, however, has no known case of Ebola. The government, therefore, calls for calm as it takes steps to keep the public safe.
