Ministry of mines and energy strengthen the fight against illicit mining as several illicit miners arrested and illegal mining equipment confiscated. A team of mineral inspectors alongside the Liberian national joint security headed by Regional Coordinator(RC) of mines and energy Mr. Alfred Passawe over the weekend carried out a robust inspection exercise in the western region(Bomi, Cape Mount, and Gbarpolu).

The exercise saw the arrest of several illicit miners that will be processed and forwarded to court for onward prosecutions. Also with the ban on the usage of dredges and other illegal machines, there were several illegal mining types of equipment confiscated and will be subsequently destroyed by the ministry. Several mining sites were order shut-down to renew their mineral licenses and pay their taxes in national government coffers.

In 2019, the mining sector contributed over 150,000,000(One hundred fifty million dollars ) to the national government as revenue generated. 2020 saw an increase in that amount to approximately a 200million dollars. Thanks to the Regional Coordinator of mines and energy assigned in the western region in the person of Alfred Passewe for his excellent record of service and robust fight against illicit mining in the western region. We at Shine Liberia say Kodus to Rc Alfred Passewe and his team for their hard work. Keep it up.
